“So too, monks, I saw the ancient path, the ancient road traveled by the Perfectly Enlightened Ones of the past. And what is that ancient path, that ancient road? It is just this Noble Eightfold Path; that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.”

The Basic Teaching of Suffering

Bhante Gunaratana

The process of the training path is described: no remorse, happiness, concentration, insight, knowledge of the Truth, and enlightenment. Four types of students are described: those that attain enlightenment after hearing only a few words of Dhamma; those who attain enlightenment after a little reflection and study; those who study and practice for a long time but need the help of a master, an “excellent friend” to provide the key to enlightenment; and finally those who enjoy word and ideas so much that they may lose sight of the goal, but can still attain enlightenment with the help of an “excellent friend”.
