BHANTE G CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

Celebrating a Century of Life, Teaching & Compassion

1927–2027

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Most Venerable Henepola Gunaratana Mahāthera — “Bhante G”

On December 7, 2027, Most Venerable Henepola Gunaratana Mahāthera, affectionately known throughout the world as Bhante G, will reach the extraordinary milestone of 100 years of age.

His centenary presents a rare opportunity to celebrate not simply his longevity, but a lifetime devoted to the Buddha’s teachings and to promoting mindfulness, compassion, wisdom, inner peace, and understanding among people throughout the world.

The Bhante G Centennial Celebrations will be more than a birthday observance. They are envisioned as a year-long celebration of Bhante G’s life, teachings, service, and enduring legacy, bringing together monastics, devotees, meditation practitioners, interfaith leaders, scholars, friends, and well-wishers from around the world.

Most importantly, this centennial provides an opportunity to document, preserve, and share a century of life and teaching for future generations.

A YEAR OF CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

Under the guidance of Venerable Dr. Saddhajeewa, Acting Abbot of the Bhavana Society, a Centennial Working Committee has begun planning a series of programs and initiatives leading to Bhante G’s 100th birthday on December 7, 2027.

Activities are expected to take place throughout the year, culminating in a major Centennial Celebration in the Washington, D.C. area.

The Washington celebration is envisioned not simply as a two-day conference, but as the centerpiece of a broader international centennial initiative honoring Bhante G’s remarkable contribution to Buddhism and meditation.

Approximately 400–500 participants are anticipated for the main celebration.

The event is expected to bring together visiting monastics, interfaith leaders, scholars, meditation teachers, community leaders, public officials, devotees, supporters, and friends of Bhante G.

Because of the international nature of the gathering, participation in the main event will be advance-registration based.

As plans are finalized, participants may be able to register for different parts of the Centennial program, including:

  • The complete two-day Centennial Celebration
  • Individual program days
  • Meditation sessions and workshops
  • Interfaith and educational programs
  • Cultural programs
  • Special gatherings with Bhante G
  • A visit to the Bhavana Society in High View, West Virginia

Registration information, schedules, venues, accommodations, transportation arrangements, and other details will be published on this page as they become available.

CENTENNIAL PROGRAM & INITIATIVES

1. Centennial Blood Donation Drive

Give the Gift of Life

The Centennial Blood Donation Drive is envisioned as the official opening of the year-long program honoring Bhante G’s 100th birthday.

The initiative reflects the Buddhist values of compassion, generosity, and service to others. Rather than beginning the Centennial year with celebration alone, we hope to begin it through an act that can directly benefit and potentially save the lives of others.

Date, location, registration, and logistical information will be announced.

2. Vesak Program

Celebrating the Buddha’s Message

The Centennial Vesak observance will commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha while reflecting upon the timeless relevance of his teachings.

The program is expected to include meditation, Dhamma teachings, devotional observances, and opportunities for the community to gather in the spirit of wisdom, compassion, generosity, and peace.

Bhante G has spent much of his life bringing these teachings to people around the world, making the 2027 Vesak observance especially meaningful during his Centennial year.

Program and logistical details will be announced.

United Nations Day of Vesak 2027 Initiative

As part of the Centennial year, the Bhavana Society is exploring an initiative connected with the United Nations Day of Vesak commemoration in New York.

Bhante G will celebrate his 100th birthday on December 7, 2027. Given his extraordinary lifetime of service to Buddhism, meditation, mindfulness, and communities throughout the world, his Centennial year presents a meaningful opportunity for international recognition of his contribution while he remains active and continues to teach.

The Bhavana Society has begun outreach concerning the possibility of inviting Most Venerable Henepola Gunaratana Mahāthera (“Bhante G”) to participate prominently in a United Nations Day of Vesak commemoration.

One aspiration is for Bhante G to have an opportunity to address an international gathering and share a message on the Buddha’s teachings, mindfulness, compassion, peace, and their continuing relevance to humanity.

This initiative is currently being explored, and additional information will be shared as arrangements develop.

3. Mindfulness, Health & Longevity Initiative

Proposed Visit by Dr. Sanjay Gupta and the CNN Health Team

As mindfulness has increasingly become a subject of interest among physicians, psychologists, neuroscientists, researchers, and the general public, Bhante G offers a remarkable connection between an ancient contemplative tradition and the modern exploration of mindfulness and human well-being.

Over the course of his life, Bhante G has witnessed mindfulness develop from a practice relatively unfamiliar to much of the Western world into an area of significant international interest.

At nearly 100 years of age, he continues to teach and share the wisdom accumulated through decades of meditation and monastic life.

His longevity, clarity, personal journey, and lifetime of meditation practice present a rare opportunity for a conversation about subjects including:

Mindfulness • Meditation • Healthy Aging • Resilience • Compassion • Mental Well-Being • Ancient Wisdom & Modern Science

As part of the Centennial initiative, the Bhavana Society hopes to welcome Dr. Sanjay Gupta and the CNN Health team to the Bhavana Society in High View, West Virginia, for an opportunity to meet Bhante G and explore a possible interview or feature concerning his remarkable life and teachings.

Such a conversation could examine not only mindfulness and meditation, but also the relationship between contemplative traditions, healthy aging, resilience, compassion, mental well-being, and modern scientific understanding.

Douglas John Imbrogno, a former member of the Bhavana Society Board of Directors, is working with the Centennial Working Committee in support of this outreach initiative.

This is a proposed Centennial initiative. Participation by Dr. Sanjay Gupta or CNN has not yet been confirmed.

4. Special Centennial Retreat

A special meditation retreat is being planned as part of the Centennial year, providing participants with an opportunity to deepen their practice while reflecting upon the teachings that Bhante G has shared throughout his lifetime.

Program, dates, teachers, registration, and logistical information will be announced.

5. Monastic Retreat with Bhante G

A special gathering for members of the Sangha is being considered as part of the Centennial program, honoring Bhante G’s decades of monastic service, teaching, mentorship, and contribution to the international Buddhist community.

Additional information will be announced as plans are finalized.

6. Youth with Bhante G

Passing Wisdom to the Next Generation

A special youth program is being developed to create an opportunity for younger generations to encounter Bhante G’s teachings and learn from his extraordinary life experience.

The program is envisioned around themes including mindfulness, compassion, ethical living, resilience, peace, and applying the Buddha’s teachings to the challenges faced by younger generations.

It will also symbolize one of the central purposes of the Centennial Celebration: passing wisdom from one generation to the next.

Program and registration details will be announced.

7. Centennial Summit

A special Centennial Summit is being considered to bring together Buddhist monastics, meditation teachers, scholars, interfaith representatives, scientists, health professionals, and community leaders for dialogue around themes that have defined Bhante G’s life and teachings.

Potential themes include mindfulness, compassion, peace, interfaith understanding, contemplative practice, mental well-being, and the relevance of Buddhist wisdom in the modern world.

Speakers, themes, venue, and program information will be announced.

8. Centennial Kathina Ceremony

The annual Kathina Ceremony will take on special significance during Bhante G’s Centennial year.

The ceremony will provide an opportunity for the community to gather in gratitude, generosity, and fellowship while honoring the Sangha and Bhante G’s lifetime of service to the Dhamma.

Date and program information will be announced.

9. Overnight Pirith Chanting

A special overnight Pirith chanting ceremony is planned as part of the Centennial observances.

Monastics and members of the community will gather in a traditional Buddhist observance dedicated to blessings, peace, gratitude, and well-being as Bhante G approaches his 100th birthday.

Program and participation information will be announced.

10. BHANTE G’S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

The Centennial Main Event — Washington, D.C. Area

The culmination of the year-long Centennial program will be the celebration of Bhante G’s 100th birthday on December 7, 2027.

A major Centennial gathering is being planned in the Washington, D.C. area, providing greater accessibility for participants traveling from across the United States and around the world.

The main celebration is envisioned as a multi-day gathering bringing together monastics, meditation practitioners, scholars, interfaith representatives, community leaders, public officials, devotees, friends, and supporters.

The program is expected to include Dhamma teachings, meditation, reflections on Bhante G’s life and legacy, interfaith participation, presentations, cultural activities, and opportunities for the international community to celebrate this historic milestone together.

PRESERVING A CENTURY OF WISDOM

The Centennial Celebration is also an opportunity to look beyond 2027.

Bhante G’s teachings have touched generations of people throughout the world. An important objective of the Centennial initiative is therefore to preserve his story, teachings, photographs, writings, recordings, memories, and historical materials so they remain available to future generations.

The Centennial program will complement the continuing work of the Bhante G Heritage Center and the Bhavana Society’s broader mission to preserve and share his remarkable legacy.
