The Bhavana Society is deeply grateful to announce that the Bhante G Heritage Center (BGHC) has been fully completed and officially opened during the sacred Vesak season of May 2026, as a tribute honoring the life and teachings of Most Venerable Henepola Gunaratana Thero (Bhante G).
After years of planning, construction, and generous community support, the Heritage Center now stands as a permanent spiritual, educational, and cultural landmark dedicated to preserving Bhante G’s extraordinary legacy for future generations.
The building has successfully passed all county inspections and has received full occupancy approval from Hampshire County, West Virginia.

The Bhante G Heritage Center was created in honor of Most Venerable Henepola Gunaratana Thero — internationally respected meditation master, mindfulness teacher, humanitarian, and one of the most influential Theravāda Buddhist monks of our time.
Over nearly a century of compassionate service, Bhante G has:

The successful completion of the Bhante G Heritage Center was made possible through the kindness and generosity of donors, volunteers, and supporters around the world.
Major completed infrastructure and construction milestones include:
Sustainable Water Infrastructure
- Existing 300-foot water well originally installed by Bhante G in 1986 fully integrated into the facility
- Estimated savings exceeding $50,000 by avoiding the need for a new well system
Public-Use Septic System
- Fully approved Class 1 septic system installed and operational
- Designed to support public educational and retreat activities
Electrical & Mechanical Systems
- Dedicated 400 AMP electrical service

Project Status: Construction Complete
We are pleased and grateful to share that the Bhante G Heritage Center (BGHC) has successfully completed its full construction phase. The building has passed all final walkthroughs and inspections and has received the Hampshire County Occupancy Certificate, confirming that it is fully approved for residential and functional use.
With construction now complete, the project has entered its final and most meaningful phase:
furnishing the center, establishing the digital studios and library, and activating its educational and preservation mission.

- Sustainable Water Infrastructure
Water Well System
The existing water well—originally installed by Bhante G in 1986—continues to serve the Bhavana Society with exceptional reliability. Thanks to Bhante G’s foresight, the well had sufficient capacity to fully support the new Heritage Center, eliminating the need to drill a new well.

The well is now fully connected to the BGHC water supply system through the existing filtration and distribution platform, ensuring long-term sustainability.
- Public-Use Wastewater System
Septic Field Installation
A Class 1 septic system has been fully installed and approved to support public use of the Heritage Center.
System components include:
- Three chamber lines
- Total chamber length: 80 feet
- System width: 36 feet
The Hampshire County Health Department inspected and approved the system. All BGHC plumbing is now connected, and end-to-end flow is operating smoothly.
- Full Regulatory Approval & Construction Completion
Building Permits and Inspections
All required building permits were successfully obtained and formally closed by the Hampshire County Planning Department, with no outstanding actions required by the Bhavana Society.
Major milestones achieved (as of January 5, 2026):
- Final framing inspection passed (November 24, 2025)
- County approvals received for:
- First- and second-floor framing
- Structural roof trusses
- Metal roof installation
- Plumbing rough-in
- Electrical rough-in
- HVAC ducts and units
- Patio and wheelchair-accessible ramp
- Windows and exterior siding
- Major Electrical & Mechanical Systems Upgrade
A comprehensive infrastructure upgrade was completed to support the center’s residential, educational, and digital needs.
Key upgrades include:
- 400 AMP dedicated electrical service to BGHC
- Support for both 120V and 240V systems
- Underground electrical feed from a pole-mounted transformer
- New electric meter, meter housing, and dual 200-AMP disconnects
- Complete interior electrical wiring
- Fully installed and commissioned HVAC system
- Two hot water tanks installed
- Interior Completion & Finishes
Donor contributions also enabled the completion of all interior construction and finishes, including:
- Final plumbing installations
- Drywall throughout the building
- Bathroom fittings, shower cubicles, and tiling
- Custom cabinets, vanities, and built-in storage
- Interior and exterior painting
- Hardwood and tile flooring
- Final interior finishes and inspections
As a result, the Bhante G Heritage Center is now fully constructed, inspected, and approved for occupancy.

We are currently constructing a heritage center in honor of the esteemed meditation master and mindfulness expert, Most Ven. Henepola Gunaratana Thero. This center will serve as a central repository for preserving the legacy of this renowned author, who has penned 15 books that had been translated into 30 languages, written over 400 Buddhist publications, over 800 voice recordings in Buddhism, and several hundreds videos posted on the YouTube. The Bhante G Heritage Center. This is not just a building—it’s a living embodiment of his teachings and an enduring gift to future generations. Through this center, we aim to preserve and celebrate Bhante G’s extraordinary journey while creating a space for learning, reflection, and inspiration.
Preserving a Legacy
The primary objective of the Heritage Center is to safeguard and showcase the artifacts of Most Ven. Henepola Gunaratana Thero’s illustrious life. This includes:
- A comprehensive collection of his newspaper articles published worldwide over the past 75 years
- Photographs chronicling his early life in Thumpane, Sri Lanka
- Records of his meetings with global leaders
The center will also document his selfless work with marginalized communities in India, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, providing financial aid and infrastructure development, benefiting diverse religious and ethnic groups.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The center will feature a cutting-edge theater system, where visitors can:
- Listen to Most Ven. Henepola Gunaratana Thero’s insightful “Dhamma Talks” on Buddhist teachings
- Participate in guided meditation retreats
- Watch audio and video recordings on Buddhism and interfaith topics
- The center will also focus on ego eradication, attachment release, and selflessness
Accommodation and Library
The center will provide temporary residence for senior monks and retreat leaders, including those with physical challenges. The library will operate in reference mode, offering access to a vast collection of books by renowned authors on related subjects. Visitors can purchase Most Ven. Henepola Gunaratana Thero’s publications and explore his iconic works on mindfulness and meditation. Center Details The Banthe G Heritage Center will span two levels, with:
- First Floor – The Office, Library, Theater – Sound Studio, Museum , & Museum Storage . In addition, there will be total of 3 toilets , two urinals & 2 separated shower cubes for males & females.
- Audio & Video Room: A state-of-the-art theater to explore over 800 recordings and videos of Bhante G’s teachings.
- Library: A rich collection of books on Buddhism and related topics for reference.
- Museum: Showcasing Bhante G’s books and Buddhist publications, alongside artifacts from his life.
- Office Space: Functional administrative facilities to manage operations.
- Accessible Facilities: Restrooms and showers designed for everyone’s comfort.
Second Floor Highlights
Accommodations: Comfortable lodging for senior monks and retreat leaders, including four bedrooms, two of which will have en-suite facilities, catering to physical accessibility needs.

The Progress So Far – To file for a building permit , there are two perquisites – 1. Well Water system 2. Septic field system.
We’re thrilled to share that we’ve already made significant progress:
- The water well built by Bhante G himself back in the 1986 has sufficient capacity to support this project. thanks to Bhante G’s foresight. This well has six feet diameter, depth of 300 feet, precast-casing length of 62 feet ground down. This is a saving of over $50K.
- We’ve a septic design in place – This is a Class 1 System, with 3 line of Chamber of 80 feet span extending to 36 feet width, we have secured the septic field permit now, and the installation will soon begin once the framing rises.
- We just received Building Permit to start construction in April 2025
- Construction is set to begin in April 2025, with completion anticipated by the first quarter of 2026.

- Coordinate with Stakeholders: Regularly communicate with the Technical Committee, Board of Directors ( Quartey) , Architects, Structural Engineers, Contractors ( Footing, Framing, Roofing, Drywall, Tiling, Electrical & Mechanical / Plumbing etc.,) and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on project goals and progress.
- Budget Management ( Financial responsibility is with Ven. Dr. Saddhajeewa)
- Establish Budget: Develop a comprehensive budget that covers all aspects of the project, including materials, labor, permits, and contingencies. Or request the same from contract resources.
- Monitor Expenses: Track all project-related expenses to ensure they remain within the allocated budget.
- Financial Reporting: Provide regular financial reports to Ven. Dr. Saddhajeewa through contractor or self prepared, highlighting any variances and potential cost overruns.
- Scheduling and Time Management
- Create a Project Timeline: Develop a detailed project schedule, including start and end dates for each phase of construction ( keeping the .ppt based task list as a living document to track the progress).
- Manage Deadlines: Ensure that all tasks are completed on time and that any delays are promptly addressed and communicated to Ven. Dr Saddhajeewa
- Adjust Timelines: Make necessary adjustments to the schedule to accommodate unforeseen delays or changes in project scope.
- Quality Control and Assurance
- Set Quality Standards: Establish quality standards and ensure all work meets these criteria ( Follow the Hampshire County guidelines).
- Regular Inspections: Conduct regular site inspections to ensure compliance with design specifications and quality standards and encourage the “Technical Team” to participate in turns.
- Resolve Issues: Address any quality issues ( based on Hampshire County inspections ) promptly and effectively to avoid impacting the project timeline and budget.
- Risk Management
- Identify Risks: Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to address them by working with contractors and the “Technical Team”.
- Monitor Risks: Continuously monitor and assess risks throughout the project lifecycle and report deviations to Ven. Dr. Saddhajeewa.
- Contingency Planning: Develop and implement contingency plans to address unexpected challenges or disruptions.
- Supplier and Vendor Management
- Select Suppliers/Vendors: Identify and select reliable suppliers and vendors for materials and services by working with the “Technical Team” .
